The Pivot

By Brenda Jank

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39

Nothing can separate us from Jesus—nothing. Nothing! Nothing!! Nothing except ourselves—when we turn our back to Jesus. Don’t get me wrong, Jesus continues to pursue us. But, from this stance, we will quickly lose sight of Him. It is easy to pivot off center in this world of distraction and constant demands. In this state, we grow leery and weary and in the process we often lose hope as we lose sight of the One who gives us Life.

Where are you facing?

Are your eyes locked on Jesus?

Even 1 degree off center can be disastrous.

Hebrews 12:2 invites us to fix our eyes on Jesus

What does this look like?

What does this mean?

What does this mean for you? For me?

This is the real question, because there is no cookie-cutter plan. We are all wired in vastly unique and different ways. Our relationship with Jesus deserves the time and attention needed to find the way, our way, to keep our eyes fixed and focused.

Do we need to pivot? Let’s ask ourselves some questions.

What do I need to do to reconnect with God in a life-giving and life-altering manner?

Do I need …

  • More time outside
  • More time alone
  • More time with contagious, out-of-the-box believers who live on mission
  • More attention to confession
  • More joy, gratitude, celebration, and fun
  • More time grieving—allowing the Comforter to do His healing work

Do I need to …

  • Buy a highlighter and start making my Bible your own as I add highlights, dates, and prayers
  • Have lunch with a friend who lives life on purpose
  • Go on a retreat
  • Plan a personal retreat
  • Join a missional* group
  • Learn how to pray out loud, sing out loud, and share my faith* with others?

Fixed and focused.

Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus.

What is one thing you can do this week that you did not do last week?
