On Assignment: Choosing What Is Yours to Carry
The enemy of the best is the good. -John Wesley
This morning I was in Psalm 90.
Tim and I have been in our new home in Ft. Wayne for 15 months.
Having plastered the walls of our camp home with quotes, scripture, and cards – our house was decorated
in what I call “early century tape.”
In our new home, with freshly painted walls and a desire for a more modern look, my dear Tim asked me if I could refrain from using tape.
I’ve been good until this morning.
I stayed true to my word and did not tape something up to the wall. I did tape a note card to a lamppost that I see first thing every morning.
I used a great big blue marker.
Every need and every opportunity is not necessarily my assignment. Lean in and listen carefully.

Wisdom is not about choosing good over bad.
It is choosing between good and better.
In this new season of my life…
– What am I going to say yes to?
– What am I going to say no to?
– What am I going to say the time isn’t right, yet?
If I take on too much I will be ineffective, flirt with empty, and will fall short of God’s best.
So, too, if I take on too little.
If I allow drift, distraction, and discouragement to have the final say, I will also fall short of God’s best.
A wise African pastor taught my friend Denny this prayer.
Lord, let me do your will today. Nothing more. Nothing less. Nothing else. Amen
May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalm 90.17
What is the drive behind your yeses and your no’s in this season of your life?
Whose hand is on the rudder?
